It’s more of a relief that we’re where at, but it’s not a big surprise. So, this is the logical…if we had have got it right, this is what should be happening. So now we’re, you know, past US a hundred million annualized revenue, over a thousand staff and, you know, we’re, you know, a multi-billion dollar business. He travels quite a bit, spends a couple of days a week working from home, and as he’s come to appreciate over the years just how crucial it is to get regular exercise.

In November 2017, he sold $95 million worth of shares in Xero, leaving him with a 13 per cent holding in the company. He stated the sale would support his «future plans to pursue a range of philanthropic and social endeavours.» He stepped down as CEO of Xero in March 2018, continuing on with the company as a non-executive director. Drury co-founded Pacific Fibre, a company which attempted to build an internet cable between Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. The cable would have cost around $400 million but the venture was ultimately unsuccessful. In 1995, Drury established Glazier Systems, a New Zealand software development and consulting company. Glazier Systems was acquired by Advantage Group in 1999 for approximately $7.5 million, which later became Intergen. Drury subsequently co-founded Context Connect and then founded and served as CEO of AfterMail which was acquired by Quest Software .

That’s probably the hardest thing and not having that regular weekly…like I’m in the same town every week. Week on week and you join the local sorts clubs and all that sort of stuff. So, you know, it’s not…I don’t think it’s a surprise where we’re at.

Q&A with Steve Vamos, CEO, Xero

Joseph is responsible for driving Xero’s next phase of growth in APAC. He joined Xero as executive general manager of sales in 2019 and has worked in roles across a range of sectors in Australia, the UK, the US and Canada. Before joining Xero, he was the chief commercial officer at ASX listed REA Group. Joseph is a member of the Institute of Company Directors in Australia, and has a Bachelor of Management degree focused on marketing from the University of South Australia. David was CEO of IBM Australia and New Zealand and Telstra, and has wide experience as a board director including as a past director of Vodafone Group, CSIRO, CSL and TelstraClear. David has a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and English from Victoria University of Wellington and completed the post-graduate General Management Program at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. I created the company tagline Beautiful Accounting Software and the advertising tagline Do Beautiful Business.

Vamos has been a non-executive director of Telstra since September 2009. Replacing Drury is Steve Vamos, who has been working closely with Xero’s executive team over the past 18 months in preparation for his takeover. Additionally, through the Xero Partner Program, accountants are incentivised to upskill their knowledge of Xero, which has created a culture of experts within the Xero community. Drury designed the business model’s sustainable competitive advantage around ‘network effect’. He not only understood the role of accountant relationships, but how to incentivise them. Obviously, Drury needed conviction and relentless drive because it took him 12 years and a half a billion dollars of capital just to break even! He described himself as a workaholic over this 12 year period, barely taking anytime off.
